The Mediterranean network to Assess and upgrade
the Monitoring and forecasting Activity in the region
(MAMA) is an EC funded thematic network,
serving the implementation of the Mediterranean policy of the European
Union that aims to establish a peaceful area of cooperation in the MAMA focuses on the trans-national pooling of scientific and
technological resources in the basin. The aim is to share experiences
and transfer expertise to bring capacities in ocean monitoring and forecasting
in the region at comparable levels. This joint effort will contribute
to the planning and design of the initial ocean
observing and forecasting system in the All relevant agencies/organisations/institutions: (i) dealing
with the routine monitoring
of the marine environment, or (ii) providing products and/or marine
services to users (such as coast guard, shipping companies, port authorities,
environmental agencies, etc.) are invited to provide information on
their activities by responding to the MAMA questionnaire. Each country
has a dedicated MAMA Responsible Partner that will supervise, assist
and check the process of distribution, correct compilation and collection
of the questionnaire. .You can ask for more detailed information and guidance on how to access,
fill and submit your replies by contacting this address. You can alternatively
authorise us to fill the questionnaire on your behalf, on
the basis of information about your activities on the internet, and/or
from further details that you wish to provide. We will also need your
authorisation to eventually allow us to make use of the information
for a regional compilation of entries and for dissemination in the form
of reports and a web-based depository hosted on the project website. The survey aims to provide a full and complete inventory on
the existing marine monitoring activities, and the current related applications,
serving as a first step to identify gaps in infrastructures, to underpin
further research and technological developments specific to the region,
and to design an observing system that meets the needs of potential
users. The
questionnaire is structured in two parts:
1.
Part I (Section B)
deals with current applications, and provision of products and services
that rely on routine marine observations. It will furnish a picture
on the kind of services that can be derived and developed from the monitoring
activities, and provide an indication on the key elements that a feasible
ocean observing and forecasting system in the region must target. The
requested information includes details on: the main recipients; the
key requested deliverables including descriptions of products and services
provided; the associated monitoring activities including the main parameters
measured; the type of analysis and assessments made to adapt observations
to user needs; descriptions of potential additional benefits. FILL IN A SEPARATE ENTRY FORM FOR EACH APPLICATION, SERVICE OR PRODUCT
2.
Part II (Sections C and D) focuses on the technical details of existing
marine monitoring and observing sites, platforms and devices. It aims
to identify the current practices in the observation and monitoring
of the marine environment, including details on platforms, instruments,
sensors, maintenance, telecom systems, data storage, exchange codes
and formats, etc. already in use. FILL IN A SEPARATE ENTRY FORM FOR EACH OBSERVATION PROGRAMME The questionnaire can be accessed
online by connecting to: http://www.capemalta.net/medgoos/questionnaire/malta.html
from where you can also download a hardcopy of the questionnaire. Before responding to the questionnaire
please read attentively the information file
which you can download by clicking on ‘general information and help’.
There are several options to submit
the questionnaire. OPTION1 (Using an internet browser) 1) Using a blank printed copy of the
questionnaire, prepare your answers; 2) Access the questionnaire online. Enter these answers on the online form (YOU CAN DISCONNECT WHILE YOU ARE COMPOSING THE QUESTIONNAIRE); 3) Submit (you will have to go online again if you had temporarily disconnected). The MedGOOS Secretariat will automatically receive your entry. (PLEASE DO NOT PRESS SUBMIT BEFORE YOU HAVE FINALISED THE QUESTIONNAIRE AND CONFIRMED THAT THE FIELDS ARE ANSWERED CORRECTLY; THIS WILL AVOID SENDING TO US YOUR
DRAFTS AND TESTS!) 4) Print and save (as an html
file) the detailed summary description for your records; 5) Send to the MedGOOS Secretariat a copy of the detailed summary description so that we can double check that your online submission has reached us. OPTION 2 (Using a pdf file) 1) Download the questionnaire in pdf
format from the MAMA website (WP1 section) 2) Fill in and save the compiled questionnaire (you need Acrobat Approval to be able to save) 3) Send a copy of the compiled questionnaire in pdf to the MedGOOS Secretariat. OPTION 3 (Using an MS Office WORD file) 1) Download the questionnaire in MS Office Word format from
the MAMA website (WP1 section) 2) Fill in and save the compiled questionnaire 3) Send a copy of the compiled questionnaire in pdf to the MedGOOS Secretariat. OPTION 4 (Using a hardcopy) 1) Using the questionnaire template
in pdf, fill in the questionnaire (you can
do this with just the ACROBAT reader) 2) Print the compiled questionnaire; 3) Send the compiled questionnaire
to the MedGOOS Secretariat by express
post or fax. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% WE STRONGLY SUGGEST
THAT YOU USE OPTION1 TO SUBMIT YOUR REPLIES. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% ◙
As a distinguished contributor to this effort you will receive
direct updates on the survey, and qualify to receive assessments and
compilations of information that we will eventually produce. Your contribution
to this survey will be an additional asset to maximise
results from this activity. It is moreover a means to prepare our country
to fully participate and benefit from the future plans for ocean forecasting
in the region. There is no doubt
that such an effort can only lead to success if it is supported by a
wide national participation in all countries. |
