The Mediterranean Sea covers about 2,510,000 square meters. The Mediterranean sea is almost surrounded by land. This sea is also surrounded by three big continents which are Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Mediterranean Sea has also three 'doors' that open to other seas. These are: The Strait of Gibraltar which links the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The Suez Canal which links the Mediterranean Sea to to the Red Sea, and the Dardanelles which link the Mediterranean Sea with the Black Sea. There are more than twenty countries that touch with the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea has two tectonic plates which are the African plate and the Eurasian plate that are grinding together. And so we have volcanoes that erupt such as the Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli which are found all in Italy. The tectonic plates are also the cause of the earthquakes. Some say that the Mediterranean Sea comes from a greater sea that is called the Tethys. Malta and Sicily have been throughout history important islands, as they are in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. The major rivers that enter the Mediterranean Sea are: Ebro, Rhone, Po and the Nile. The Mediterranean Sea is essential for the Maltese islands. The first reason why it is essential is because the majority volume Malta brings the water from is by filtering the sea water. Another important reason is that there are many fishing men that their live depends on fishing. Another important feature is that tourists come to visit Malta mainly for the magnificent beaches it has although there are many more other attractions to see in Malta.

The Mediterranean Sea has also its fish. It has a great variety of fish and also it has mammals living in it. Unfortunately these living creatures every year are being devastated by fishing in a way that you can devastate other animals with the fish that you want to catch. For example there are fishing nets for fish that are so small that they are very thin. In these fishing nets get entangled other fish such as dolphins, which once that they are caught they can't escape so they die.

Another thing that we need to take care of is the fact that some careless people are throwing plastic bags in the sea. Now sea turtles feed on jellyfish. When the turtles see a plastic bag they confuse it with a jellyfish. When they run to eat it the result will be that they remain suffocated. Unfortunately by human carelessness the turtles are now almost extinct. I think that we should be more responsible so that the Mediterranean Sea will be someday the same as when the Mediterranean Sea was full of these nice creatures.
